IDF: Controllers for USB 3.0 hubs with universal charging function
·
The industry group USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) seems not to get some super-speed problems under control: It still seems impossible to perform an official compatibility certification for USB 3.0 hubs. Or so the Japanese chip maker Renesas announces at the announcement of the Hub Controller μPD720210. The component in the square case with only 9 millimeters in length to operate very economically and integrate many functions. The most important is the combination of four downstream ports with one upstream port, as one would expect from a stroke. At idle, the μPD720210 content with 5 milliwatts, he should with 0.35 watts maximum (350 mW) to be still one of the most frugal USB 3.0 hub controller.
Renesas also highlights the charging function for USB Battery Charging Specification 1.2, which should be easily realized with the μPD720210, thus hub ports which act as an energy source for smartphone batteries and other mobile devices with universal Micro-USB charger.
The mass production of the μPD720210, the Renesas introduces now the eve of the Intel Developer Forum IDF will begin in September. This allowed but experience shows that no statement about when USB 3.0 hubs appear with this chip: The last year announced Renesas SATA 6G USB 3.0 bridge chip μPD720230 is allegedly also long been produced in large quantities, but it is at least on the German market is not in use.
