Ultra-light aircraft, powered by solar electric energy

As part of the Air Show ILA the Bavarian company PC-Aero has introduced an ultralight aircraft with electric motor that is powered by solar cells and batteries. The Elektra One Solar is quiet and emission-free flights with ranges provide up to 1000 kilometers. Thanks to the design with carbon fiber reinforced plastic to the pilots require less power and save considerable weight: How does the single-seater by the manufacturer at no weight without batteries only 100 kilograms. The batteries weigh twice as much, up to 100 kilograms of payload should be also possible.

The plane gets to a wingspan of 11 meters, with the approximately 8 square meters wing area about 6 square meters are covered with solar cells. Unlike the large solar airplane Solar Impulse initiative, which recently completed a flight between Europe and Africa can build the small plane while flying solely on solar cells. This will boost solar modules can contribute just over 1 kW of power - not enough, as the Elektra One Solar flying horizontally need around 2.5 kW. The remaining energy is placed on the lithium-ion batteries available. Maximum engine power of the electric motor there is 16 kW.

However, should the batteries can be recharged via a mobile, equipped with solar charger, so that the aircraft can be operated with pure solar energy. The charging station doubles as a trailer for transport of the aircraft. The charging function of the mobile "service station" according to PC-Aero but can also be acquired by a suitably equipped hangar. End of the year, the pilots received its approval from an exact date for the market launch and pricing are not yet known.
