Apple reportedly interested in set-top box technology

According to a report of the Wall Street Journal, Apple has held discussions with U.S. cable operators to install a receiver for the transmitter in one of its devices may. The goal is to enable customers to use an Apple hardware as a set-top box for live TV and other content to use - similar to what Google tried with Google TV already. The discussion would be the "most ambitious attempt to infiltrate the living room."

Deals with cable providers Apple had made but not yet. One hurdle remains that the suppliers were reluctant to allow the computer company to get into the TV business. It is planned according to the report, sell a so-called aftermarket unit for "hundreds of dollars" - currently renting U.S. cable customers corresponding boxes for 10 to 15 dollars a month.

The idea is not new: in digital video recorders (DVRs) such as TiVo offering in the United States has long been boxes; means "CableCARD" module compatibility to existing cable operator technique. Apple internally it works since 2006 with ideas for a DVR, show how corresponding patent applications that have recently been a positive response.

The computer company should consider, according to the Wall Street Journal at least two years, to build in directly set-top box technology. The late CEO Steve Jobs had in the summer of 2010 or opposition expressed to the idea. "Nobody wants to buy a box" Reason is that there is not enough national party, he said at the time. Apple is reported to have also considers, set-top box technology later incorporate into a possible Apple TV. First candidate for the first in Europe probably not useful function would be probably the multimedia box Apple TV.
