Extremely thin display on the dashboard


Japan Display has unveiled a one-millimeter-thick screen for use in the car.

Six months ago, the Japanese electronics giant Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi have founded a joint subsidiary for manufacturing small and medium sized screens. Now, Japan Display, as the new company is, as shown prototype versions of a new mobile display, which is designed to be installed in the dashboard of vehicles.



The so-called Car Display features a 12.2-inch screen size and display 1920 by 720 pixels. The screen is less than a millimeter thick and incorporates the necessary touchscreen components that make it sensitive to touch. It uses is the Japan-display technique called "pixel Eyes" and should also be suitable for stylus operation. According to the company, these are a liquid crystal display that can be so thin, because the touch-sensitive component could be directly integrated into the display module.

Another new feature is the "White Magic" method. With this it is possible, in addition to red, green and blue dots represent directly white pixels, which is expected to reduce the power required for the backlight significantly. Up to 40 percent of energy should be possible to save - alternatively, the screen can also work simply brighter than normal displays without the technology. One application would be to use in bright daylight conditions - even in the car, this is particularly useful in bright sunlight.

Mass production of the car display is planned, according to Japan Display in just over a year. Together with the new screen on the dashboard, which is also for "Smart Dashboard" - is provided and navigation applications, the company showed parallel even with a new smartphone screen with HD capability and a very sharp 438 ppi density of points as well as a tablet display seven inches and a resolution of 2560 by 1600 pixels. (For comparison, Google uses this format currently in 10-inch laptops.)

All three screens are based, according to company information on technology, created by Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba, and now could be converted into an overall product. The companies had joined forces in order to survive better together against Chinese competition may urging meanwhile massively on the LED market. Japan loses rather more manufacturing facilities in China, despite market share.
