DDoS attack Paypal costs £ 3.5 million

Paypal has about 3.5 million pounds (4.3 million euros) in the defense and armament against cyber attacks after the hacker group Anonymous in 2010 and 2011 attacked several websites, including MasterCard and Visa. They had refused to support Wikileaks and proceeded against internet piracy.

As prosecutor Sandip Patel reported the BBC, the attacks have seriously damaged Paypal. "More than 100 employees of PayPal's parent company eBay were employed for more than three weeks trying to eliminate the consequences of the attacks." Paypal also had to buy more software and hardware, to prepare themselves against similar attacks in the future. Paypal was attacked because the company refused in December 2010 to pay payments to the company founded by Julian Assange, the need for continued operation of fresh money.

The attacker took advantage of the course of "Operation Payback" distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDoS), which flooded the attacked computer with requests. Patel pulls in this context the comparison of hackers as "vandals" to be called. The resulting damage to Paypal was "unprecedented". The damage in the British music industry associations, however, were considerably lower, at 10,000 pounds each.

Three of those arrested in January alleged participants have already been found guilty by the Southwark Crown Court. a judgment in the case of a 22-year-old has been lacking and he was arrested in April. He pleads not guilty. According to Patel, he took part in the attacks, and used, among other things the Russian service providers Heihachi, who was a safe haven for renegades. The 22-year-old is said to have boasted that Heihachi basically allow everything - even child pornography.

The defendant denies that the seized computer equipment he owned. The computer was confiscated property of its sister. According to Patel, the passwords can be used there, but to a different conclusion. The 22-year-old was called in hacker circles "Nerdo". The found on the seized computer passwords are all variations of the words "Nerdo is the best (or worst) hacker in the world".
