Beta of Fedora 18 brings with Mate and Cinnamon

Almost two months later than originally planned, the Fedora Project has released the first and only beta of Fedora 18 for download. In the repositories of "Spherical Cow" said Linux distribution you will now find the Mate desktop that provides the Gnome-2-surface. The main version of Fedora uses GNOME 3.6.2 as desktop, the KDE spin uses the KDE Software Collection 4.9.3, and 1.6.7 and XFCE 4.10 Cinnamon can be installed via the repositories.

The main reason for the delay was the work on the Anaconda installer, which was significantly modified for a facelift. The function to update an older version of Fedora is omitted. This task will be done in the future, the tool Fedup which packages to update the old system downloads; the next time the system recognizes these files and executes the distribution update.

An overview of other new features in Fedora 18 provides the project wiki. If it does not have another delay, as the Fedora Project likely to occur should the Linux distribution on 8 January appear.
