Sims Cows
A French company has developed a mobile-based hardware with which farmers can always stay in control of their cattle.
Ruminants will communicate via cellular network. At least that's the idea of the French group Medria. It uses machine-to-machine communication (M2M) for a special application: the monitoring of cattle.
M2M allows different technical systems via mobile network to interact directly with each other. This is used for example in industrial plants help to realize the remote monitoring remote locations: Whenever change important parameters via M2M signaling is carried. Technically, such a system is based on the sensor elements, which detect the data, a control unit for controlling and a compact mobile radio module. The latter costs thanks to mass production now only two-digit euro amount. Addition, there is a SIM card of the network operator - done.
M2M specialist Medria wants the technology now also prevail on the farm. For this purpose, the company offers several products that can monitor the health of the animals, their mating and calving periods. In this case, the farmer is informed only if it is really urgent, constantly evaluating the resulting data does the computer.
Sanphone is a health sensor for ruminants. The sensor element is given once the animals along with the food in a sealed container and is a lifetime in the rumen. It measures the temperature every five minutes, the result is then broadcast to an up to 200 meters from the base station - from there it goes again via mobile network to a central computer.
Covered by Sanphone is also the feeding and water absorption behavior of the animals, which results in a complex picture of the condition of the herd. From the data it can be predicted, for example, if the cattle suffering from frequent diseases. Early detection is also more possible because current values are available much faster than in controls by a physician.
Medrias second product called Heat Phone and turn serves to monitor the cycle of female cows. The system analyzes the behavior of the animals in the field via a sensor band with accelerometers and to the fertility phases can be predicted with an accuracy of up to 90 percent.
An SMS message is by the farmers when an insemination seems sensible. In addition, the collected data is transmitted every half hour via mobile phone to a server at Medria and also archived. An Internet platform called "Daily Web Services" also allows to view stats and graphs.
The cow is finally pregnant, Velphone is used. This product is used to predict the imminent birth of the animals. Vaginalthermometer means it can be seen when a cow exactly expecting a calf. Is it so far, the farmer will also be informed via SMS - regardless of where the affected animal is currently located. Here, too, are working with a combination of radio transmitters, base station and M2M module. The system also detects the normal temperature pattern of the cows in order to detect deviations correctly.
Both Velphone and Heat Phone to be launched in Europe by Deutsche Telekom to the farmer. In a first step up to 5000 farms are the technique obtained. For the giant pink Medria be decided by its own account, because the network quality tidy and in the country is. Without good reception all the technology is of little benefit.
If everything goes according Medria and telecom, farmers have with the system in the future much less stress, "Thanks to M2M communications technology, the farmer does not have to endure long nights in the barn," says a sign.
